Wisdom Tooth Extraction

There are 2 types of extractions, simple and surgical extractions. Wisdom tooth extractions are mostly always surgical extractions. They erupt between the ages of 16 and later. Because at this age we become wiser, they have been nicknamed "wisdom teeth".

Some people never develop wisdom teeth and for others, wisdom teeth erupt normally and cause no problems.

Some dentists and oral surgeons recommend wisdom tooth extraction as a preventative measure even if they aren't actually causing problems. This can reduce the risk of future infection, tooth decay, and teeth crowding.

At Soleil dental clinic of Brossard, our experienced dentists use the latest technology in 3D imaging to determine the exact location of your wisdom teeth. Call us now for an appointment

Is it necessary to remove wisdom teeth?

  • Sometimes If there isn't enough space for the wisdom tooth to come out it can erupt at an angle or get stuck or may press against other teeth.
  • For some people, wisdom teeth can cause pain and swelling.
  • Wisdom teeth are the third molars, and due to their position far back in the mouth, you may not be able to reach them with a toothbrush or dental floss and therefore they may have cavities.

Why do we have wisdom teeth?

Wisdom teeth were necessary for our ancestors to be able to chew raw foods like meat, roots, and nuts in the absence of knives. Their jaws were larger so the extra teeth fit in their mouth more easily.

How long does it take to recover from a tooth extraction?

The recovery process depends on the type of extraction you had. During the first 24 hours of the recovery process, you may suffer some minor pain and bleeding which should go away by taking painkillers.

After around 3 days there should be no further bleeding and very or no minor swelling.

How painful is a tooth extraction?

The extraction isn't a painful process, but you may experience pain and soreness after the procedure which will go away with normal painkillers.

Recovery tips for after teeth extraction surgery

Your dentist will place gauze over the extraction zone and you should bite your jaws together to keep the pressure at least for 30 minutes.

For the 24 hours after removing your wisdom tooth, you should:

  • Avoid drinking alcohol and smoking
  • Avoid drinking hot liquids
  • Avoid eating hard foods
  • Limit physical activity in order to not dislodge the clot
