Symptoms of chronic dental pain, soreness, swelling, or sensitivity to hot and cold can be a sign of a tooth infection. Fortunately, if detected and treated early enough, an infected tooth can be saved from extraction by endodontic treatment.

Dr. Sharif has about 50 years of experience with root canal therapy and his goal is to provide exceptional dental care without pain or anxiety.

We want all of our patients to enjoy the benefits of a healthy and beautiful smile.

What is root canal therapy?

Root canal therapy is a dental procedure used to treat infected or injured tissue (pulp), a condition called pulpitis, from the crown and roots of the tooth.

Our dentists use techniques, to reach deep into the tooth so they can remove the infected pulp, and clean and disinfect the canals in the tooth roots. If left untreated the infection surrounding the tooth will eventually cause the loss of the tooth.

After removing the infected nerve the pain and the development of the infection stops.

A successful root canal treatment allows you to keep the tooth, rather than remove it, If left untreated, the infection around the tooth will eventually cause the tooth to be lost.

Normally after a root canal, the tooth is filled with special filling materials or if there is lots of tissue loss the dentist advises you to have a post and crown.

What causes the need for a root canal?

The most common causes why a person may need a root canal are:

  • Deep decay If a cavity becomes large enough, it can enter your pulp
  • Nerve damage due to accident
  • Poor oral hygiene

Bacteria can then penetrate the tooth and infect the pulp, which can cause pain or inflammation.

Is root canal treatment painful?

Generally, a root canal treatment involves no pain. In the last years, modern dentistry has made this procedure more comfortable than ever and it’s performed with minimal discomfort or no discomfort when it’s done with an experienced dentist.

It is important to keep in mind that the discomfort you may experience after the procedure is far outweighed by the benefits of keeping your natural tooth.

How much is root canal treatment?

The cost varies depending on how complex the procedure is and which tooth is affected. Molars are more difficult to treat because they have three or more canals. Front teeth have normally one canal.

But most dental insurance policies provide some coverage for endodontic treatment. In general, root canal treatment and the restoration of the natural tooth are less expensive than having the tooth extracted and then replaced with an implant or bridge.
