Dental Inlay and Onlay

Dental Inlays and Onlays are similar to dental fillings and they are used to treat tooth cavities. When a patient has a cavity that is too large to be treated with a dental filling an inlay or onlay is typically used. For serious tooth damage, it might be necessary to have root canal therapy and the use of a crown.

Some benefits of inlays and onlays are:

  • They are more durable and last longer than fillings
  • They are more resistant to fractures and damage than fillings
  • They are more aesthetic than metal fillings and crowns which tend to stain over time
  • They let your dentist preserve more of your tooth’s structure

Our dentist at Soleil Dental Clinic of Brossard can evaluate the condition of your teeth, and recommend a personalized treatment plan designed to help you get your smile back.

What is the difference between fillings, inlay, onlay, and dental crown?

If you have a decayed tooth, first our dentist applies local anesthesia and removes the decayed portion, and the space is filled with an amalgam or composite filling material. It’s a quick process and involves only one visit.

If the cavity is too large for a filling, then our dentist may advise you for an inlay or onlay instead of a filling. He will take an impression of your tooth and send it to a dental lab. You’ll wear a temporary cover on your tooth in the meantime until your inlay or onlay will be made so our dentist will fit it into your tooth.

If your cavity is too large for a filling, an inlay, or an onlay, then our dentists will recommend a dental crown which is a tooth cap that covers the entire visible portion of your tooth.

Whether a filling, inlay, onlay, or crown is right for you, our dentists in our Brossard Dental Clinic are here to help.
